Lloyd Christie (JP (Rtd))

Lloyd CHRISTIE (JP (Rtd)) Obituary

Lloyd Christie a past President of Athletics Waikato Bay of Plenty 2008-09 and Patron of Athletics Tauranga Inc passed away in Tauranga, 6th December, aged 93 years.  He began his athletic career in Matamata winning a Junior Waikato Steeplechase title in the late 1940’s and placing second in the Mount Maunganui King of the Mountain race in 1953 representing Matamata.

Lloyd moved to Oropi, Tauranga where he farmed until 1997. In 1965 he made his farm available for Tauranga Ramblers Harrier Club for the famous Oropi Cross Country course where a 2 ½ mile circuit was developed with a shorter course for women and juniors.  This would be the home of cross country running for Tauranga until after Lloyd and Kathleen Christie sold the remainder of their property in 1997 to move into Tauranga in their retirement.

Through the Christie Family Trust, Lloyd and Kathleen would be benefactors supporting the Oropi Community Hall redevelopment, St Johns Ambulance and Athletics.

The Christie Family Trust was one of the major contributors to the Tauranga All Weather Athletics Track being the initial construction of the facility and the resurfacing of the same at Tauranga Domain.  Lloyd Christie was Chairperson of the Tauranga Millennium Track Trust for a term and served on the committee of Tauranga Ramblers Harrier Club and was known for his wise counsel and advice for the club and its members. He actively ran as a veteran athlete and was a Champion of his Oropi Cross Country Course.

Lloyd Christie will be remembered as a person who supported athletics in Tauranga in his quiet unassuming way.
