From Under 10s through to Masters, we welcome athletes from across our region to compete at the 2026 Waikato-Bay of Plenty Road Race Championships. Whether you’re racing for a championship title, striving for a personal best, or achieving a personal goal, these championships welcome all.
New for 2026, athletes in the U20 through to Masters grades will have the option to contest either the 5km or 10km championship race, reflecting the road championship distances now offered nationally by Athletics New Zealand.

Event Scheduling: Please note that these published race times may change once entries have been received. Depending on entry numbers, some events may be combined; for example, the 10km race may start at the same time as the 5km race.
Championship Eligibility: This event is the 2026 Championship Road Race event for Athletics Waikato-Bay of Plenty. Athletes who are current members of an affiliated club within our region are eligible for Championship honors and medals. Please note – registered athletes must wear their club uniform to be eligible for Championship honors.
Open Event: This event is open to any athlete who wishes to participate, although Championship honors will be awarded to Waikato-Bay of Plenty club registered athletes.
Event Fees Information
- Club Registered Athletes (Club Reg) are athletes with a current competitive membership of a club affiliated to Athletics NZ.
- Not Registered Athletes (Not Reg) are unattached or social athletes who are not current financial members of a club affiliated to Athletics NZ.
Course description: The course has been designed as a 2km circuit, with the start/finish area located at the 1km mark. The various race distances will circulate as follows:
- 2km race (U10) – two laps of half loop (2x 1km)
- 3km race (U12, U14) – one full 2km lap, followed by a 1km half lap
- 5km race (U16 & up) – two full 2km laps, followed by a 1km half lap
- 10km race (u20 & up) – five full 2km laps.
The course is in the APL Factory Complex, with all the circuit on a sealed road surface. The topography is completely flat, with no elevation gain.

Venue: Access to the APL Facility is off Victoria Rd. If you are travelling on the Waikato Expressway, take the Victoria Rd / Hautapu exit. Parking is available within the APL Complex.
Facilities: This is an outdoor Road Race venue with limited shelter. Toilets will be on-site. Bring your own drinking water.
Tents: There is space for tents on flat grass surface, and we encourage clubs to bring tents for members to utilise. Ensure tents are secured with pegs or straps. Come prepared for all types of weather.
Medal Presentations: Medal presentation will take place soon after each event concludes, near the finish area.
Grades: The athlete’s grade is determined by age on 31 December 2026, except Masters, which is determined by age on event day (age on 16th August 2026). Where multiple grades compete in the same combined race, the results will be separated and reflect the appropriate grade.
Race Numbers: Each athlete will be allocated a race number to be pinned to your front. Pick this up in plenty of time prior to your event at the registration desk near the start area (Athletics WBOP Gazebo).

NZ 10km Road Race Championships | 29th August 2026 | New Plymouth:
The NZ 10km Road Race Championships will be contested by the following grades;
- Senior Men and Women
- Masters Men and Women (5-year age groups)
- Under 20 Men and Women
- Grades for Senior Para athletes, as appropriate.
Included in the Championships is a Teams category for Regional Teams (4 counting athletes) and Club Teams (3 counting athletes). All entered athletes will be included in the regional team, plus they can also be part of one Club Team. There is no limit on Team size, although team members need to be declared prior to the start of the event. The Team categories contested include;
- U20 Men and Women
- Senior Men and Women
- Masters Men and Women (35+, 50+ and 65+ age groups)
All athletes compete in their Club uniform (not Regional uniform). If you intend to compete you will need to complete your own registration, as well as organise your personal travel and accommodation arrangements.
Entry closing dates:
- Standard entries close 11:59pm 17 August (Name on bib deadline)
- Late entries close 11:59pm 21 August
