Secondary School Athletics

The Waikato & Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Track and Field programme consists of the following events – Zone meetings, Regional Championships and North Island Championships. Prior to the Zone events, we encourage all Secondary Schools to have had their school’s athletics day.

Grading Information:  Athletes will compete in the following grades, based on their age as of December 31st, in the year of competition. 

  • u15 (Junior)
  • u17 (Intermediate)
  • u20 (Senior)

*Para athletes as above, except Senior grade ORS funded students u22 in year of competition.

ZONE Track & Field events: In the Waikato & Bay of Plenty region, there are 4 zone events, with athletes eligible to compete in 1 of these events. You will be representing your school. From the Zone events, students who place well will qualify for the Waikato & Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships. 

  • Central Zone: Tuesday 3rd March – For Hamilton and Cambridge| Porritt Stadium, Hamilton.
  • Southern & Country Zone: Tuesday 10 March – For King Country, Northwest & South Waikato | Te Awamutu Stadium.
  • Thames Valley Zone: Wednesday 11th March – For Coromandel, Hauraki Plains, and Te Kauwhata | Paeroa Domain.
  • Bay of Plenty Zone: Thursday 12th March – For Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, and Eastern BoP | Tauranga Domain.

WAIKATO & BAY OF PLENTY SECONDARY SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our regional Secondary School championships is the premiere Track & Field event for Secondary School athletes across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region. Athletes compete in their school colours. Athletes who place well at our Regional Championships will qualify to represent Waikato & Bay of Plenty at the North Island Secondary School Track and Field Championships (NISSAA).

  • Date: Wednesday 18th March
  • Location: Tauranga Domain.
  • Time: First field event 8:30am, First Track event 9:25am

NORTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

This major event brings together athletes from across the North Island, competing for their region in this annual 2-day Track & Field Championships.

  • Date: 28th-29th March 2026
  • Location: Massey Park, Papakura, Auckland. 
  • The Waikato & Bay of Plenty team is selected based on performances at the regional championships.
