Event Details

The WBOP Open Meet Series is more than a collection of competitions – it is a core part of the athlete-development pathway across the season. The programme is deliberately structured to build in progressions, particularly early in the season, for developmental and training purposes. Non-standard distances and events feature throughout, giving athletes the chance to build event-specific skills and race experience without the pressure and scrutiny of championship competition.

The event schedule across the WBOP Open Meeting Series is designed around two consistent principles that run through the whole season:

  • Event combinations: Programmes are built so athletes can enter more than one event per meeting, supporting training and development goals.
  • Event variety: Non-championship events feature throughout, giving athletes the chance to compete in events outside a traditional programme.

How Open Events Are Run

  • Seeding: Where an event has multiple races (e.g. 100m), heats will generally be seeded by ability rather than by age grade.
  • Combined races: For non-laned events, where athlete numbers allow it to be run safely, genders and age grades may be combined into a single race.
  • Safety and officiating: Event Management’s priority is always safe competition for athletes and spectators. We aim to have sufficiently qualified officials at every meeting; along with experienced volunteers assisting with delivery. You will always receive your result.
  • Volunteering: Athletics meetings rely on volunteers to help with setup, pack up, and during the meeting. Please get in touch if you would like to be on our volunteer roster or simply make yourself known when you are at an Open meeting.
  • Records & Standards: If you believe you’re in form to attempt a New Zealand or international record, or a qualifying standard for international competition, please contact Event Management ahead of the meeting so we can ensure the right level of officiating is in place.

Scratching & Refund Policy

  • Entry fees for the WBOP Open Series are non-refundable. We keep entry fees low and accessible across the season, and the admin cost of processing individual refunds isn’t viable within that model.
